Identity, Safety, and the Ransomed Life

“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower;

the righteous run to it and are safe.” — Proverbs 18:10

Proverbs 18:10 reveals far more than a place of protection. The name of the Lord offers a ransomed-identity in place of false-identity. For those marked by trauma, loss, addiction, or shame, that distinction matters.

A ransomed-identity begins with righteousness.

Many reject that immediately. "That cannot be me." Righteousness sounds like someone who never struggled, failed, or carried shame. In Christ, righteousness signifies position, not perfection. Synonyms like honorable, moral, and respectable describe people who made mistakes, took chances, or received unfair treatment, yet chose integrity. They acknowledge who they are and what they have done, allowing redemption, not shame, to define them. Integrity means ownership, not performance. It means saying, "This is my story," without being crushed by it.

Jesus lived and died to make us new creations, not better pretenders. We receive righteousness, not achieve it. We exchange our shame, guilt, and condemnation for His purity. What once held us emotionally captive no longer labels us. His identity does.

Righteous identity becomes experiential when we become fortified.

Fortified means more than defended. It means strengthened, encouraged, refreshed, equipped, prepared, and sustained, especially where trauma fractured identity. God restores what was torn down. He reestablishes our ability to trust, hope, and move forward. He equips us to live fully as His chosen people.

Fortified also means protected, defended, and upheld. Yet God goes beyond sheltering us. He decrees His Name over us, the Name that carries power, love, and a sound mind.

With a ransomed-identity, the fortified tower transcends the battlefield. It rises above chaos, giving us perspective. In Scripture, a tower means more than a hiding place; it is a stronghold. When we run to the tower of the Lord, we step out of false identities such as victim, addict, offender, unwanted, and unsafe into truth. We stand on something solid, see differently, and remember who we are. We stop hiding and begin seeing life through God's eyes.

Finally, the awareness of safety carries enormous weight for trauma survivors.

Many of us learned to create self-protection by controlling our environments, guarding our hearts, and becoming our own fortification. God offers shelter, which means secure, unharmed, innocent, dependable, and whole. He leads us back to the unique identity He originally designed.

This is the heart of the Ransomed to be a Sanctuary story. Running to the Name of the Lord means more than escaping danger. It means stepping into our redeemed unique identity.

If I paraphrased this proverb through the lens of identity, it might sound like this:

The Name of the Lord—Father, Son, and Spirit—is my identity and my strength. In Him, I am encouraged, refreshed, and sustained. He defends and equips me, preparing me for what lies ahead. He lifts me into a tower that rises above the battle and becomes my stronghold. In His Name, I am r

ighteous, not because I am perfect, but because I am ransomed. I run to Him fully, without hesitation, because wellbeing is found there. In His safety, I am made new. I am restored, protected, and re-identified, while my Champion stands guard over me.
